What If We Just Let Go and Finally Trust God? 3 Ways to Overcome Worry

What if we just let go of the worries in life and finally trust God for our lives?

It sounds simple, doesn’t it?

But when we really think about it, it’s one of the hardest things to do. I often find myself saying, “Okay Lord, I trust You.” And yet, when life gets messy — when plans don’t go the way I expect, or when the future feels unclear — I find myself slowly slipping back into worry again.

It’s a cycle that I’m sure many of us can relate to.

We remind ourselves of God’s promises, but when things start to shake, we catch ourselves trying to take control again — worrying about what’s next, what might happen, or what could go wrong.

Then God gently reminds me once more: “Let go. Trust Me.”

When Faith and Fear Collide

Is there really anyone who hasn’t doubted or been overwhelmed by fear in their walk with God?

If you think about it, even the greatest heroes of faith had their moments of weakness.

Abraham doubted when he and Sarah waited for the promise of a son. Moses hesitated and argued with God about his calling. David, a man after God’s own heart, spent years running, hiding, and crying out in despair. Even Jesus’ disciples — the ones who walked beside Him — had moments when fear overtook their faith.

And that’s exactly why Jesus reminded His followers:

“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33, NIV)

He knew that trouble and worry are part of our human experience. He knew how easily our hearts can be troubled by what we see, hear, or feel. But He also gave us the beautiful assurance that in the middle of the storm, we are not alone.

The Human Tendency to Worry

If you’re someone who tends to overthink (like me), you probably know how tiring it can be. You might find yourself replaying situations in your head, asking “What if?” questions that only add more fear instead of peace.

Sometimes, it even feels “impossible” not to worry.

When bills are due, when health is uncertain, when relationships feel fragile — how can we not worry? But that’s exactly where God steps in. Because while it might be impossible in our human strength, nothing is impossible with God.

When Jesus told Peter to walk on water, Peter actually did — until he looked around and saw the waves. And when he began to sink, Jesus didn’t scold him for failing.

He simply reached out His hand and asked,

“Why did you doubt?” (Matthew 14:31)

That simple question always humbles me. It’s not said in anger, but in love.

It’s as if Jesus is saying, “Did you really think I would let you drown?”

Learning to Trust Again (and Again)

Trusting God isn’t a one-time decision — it’s a daily surrender. Every morning, we get to choose: Will I walk by faith, or will I walk by fear?

And the truth is, it’s a process. We won’t always get it right. Some days, our hearts are full of faith. Other days, worry creeps in quietly and takes over before we even notice. But even in our weakness, God’s grace remains constant.

He doesn’t grow tired of reminding us to return to Him. He patiently teaches us that peace doesn’t come from having everything under control — it comes from knowing Who is in control.

That’s why He gave us the Holy Spirit — our Helper, our Comforter, our Guide.

When we walk in the Spirit, we begin to see things differently. The impossible becomes possible. The overwhelming becomes manageable. The fearful becomes peaceful. Because it’s not about having a problem-free life. It’s about having a heart that rests in God despite the problems.

3 Simple Steps When You Start to Feel Worried or Afraid

If you’re currently in a season where fear or worry keeps trying to take over, here are three simple steps that I’ve been learning to practice — little rhythms that help me shift my focus back to God.

1. Pause and Pray Before You React

Worry often comes in waves — fast, loud, and sudden.

Before we know it, we’ve already imagined ten worst-case scenarios. But when you notice that rising tension in your chest or those racing thoughts in your mind, pause. Breathe.

Then pray.

It doesn’t have to be long or fancy. Even a simple prayer like “Lord, I’m starting to worry again. Please help me trust You right now.” can shift your focus back to Him.

Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us:

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Prayer doesn’t always change our situation immediately — but it changes us. It helps us breathe again and realign our thoughts to truth.

2. Remember What God Has Already Done

When fear makes you forget who God is, look back and remember.

  • Hasn’t He already carried you through hard things before?
  • Didn’t He provide when you didn’t know how things would work out?
  • Didn’t He give you peace when you thought you’d never find it again?

Remembering His faithfulness in the past helps build faith for the present.

David said in Psalm 77:11-12,

“I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds.”

Start a habit of journaling your answered prayers or moments of grace. They don’t have to be big miracles — even the small ones matter.

Over time, you’ll realize just how consistent God has been, even when you couldn’t see it.

3. Declare God’s Word Over Your Worries

When your thoughts begin to spiral, speak truth — out loud if you can.

Remind yourself what God says about who He is and what He promises. When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, He responded with Scripture — not emotion, not logic, but truth. You can do the same when worry whispers lies to your heart.

Here are a few verses I like to declare when I feel anxious or afraid:

  • “When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.” (Psalm 56:3)
  • “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7)
  • “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” (Exodus 14:14)
  • “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27)

Sometimes, declaring God’s Word isn’t about making the problem go away — it’s about making faith louder than fear.

Surrender Is Not Weakness — It’s Trust

Letting go doesn’t mean giving up.

It means choosing to trust that God’s hands are safer than ours. It means believing that even when we can’t see the way forward, He’s already making a path. It means surrendering control — not out of defeat, but out of confidence that His ways are better.

So when life starts to overwhelm you, take heart. You’re not failing. You’re learning what it means to walk by faith. And every time you turn your eyes back to Jesus, even after doubting or worrying — that’s still faith.

It’s imperfect, but it’s real. And that’s the kind of faith God can work with.

A Gentle Reminder for You Today

Maybe you’re facing something right now that feels too heavy. Maybe you’re unsure how things will unfold. Maybe you’ve prayed and cried and still don’t see answers.

If that’s you, take this as God’s quiet whisper to your heart:

“My child, I’ve got you. You don’t have to figure it all out. Just trust Me.”

And when you do — even in small steps, even through tears — you’ll start to feel His peace again.

The same peace that Jesus promised when He said,

“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you.”

You’ll realize that trusting God doesn’t mean life gets easier — but it means your heart gets stronger. Because the One who holds the world in His hands also holds you. 💛
